Statement Regarding Legal Settlement
The Diocese of Prince George and the Catholic Independent Schools of the Prince George Diocese, along with St. Thomas More Collegiate, were able to negotiate a settlement with John Doe which we hope will provide some degree of restitution for the harm that was so unjustly inflicted upon him by his abuser.
Although neither the Diocese nor the School were aware of the wrongdoing that occurred back in the 1990s, they have recognized and accepted the legal responsibility that arose vicariously due to the acts of its employee in these circumstances. We hope and pray that this resolution will allow John Doe to continue his process of healing and may this healing extend to all victims of abuse.
The Diocese and CISPG recognize that abuse by anyone representing the Church constitutes a serious breach of trust in human relationships and that it can have incalculable effects for victims and their families, for the Church, and for the community at large. The Church in Canada has taken significant steps to prevent abuse, including careful evaluation and training of clergy, staff and volunteers. To ensure that any allegation of abuse is addressed properly, the Diocese has engaged an independent reporting agency, managed by a team of psychologists, counsellors and social workers to ensure a quick, accessible and compassionate response. Reports can be made to that agency at 1-800-968-3146 or by calling the police in cases of immediate harm.
